Southwest Airlines announced yesterday that they will begin two daily nonstops from Akron-Canton to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) on November 2, 2014. Needless to say, we are absolutely thrilled about the announcement. We have worked hard to ensure the successful integration of AirTran and Southwest at CAK and this signals that we’ve done a thing or two right. From our #LUVCAK grassroots campaign to our co-op advertising, we’ve been in lock step since the acquisition was announced. Things haven’t...

Last summer Rick and I got a visit from the leaders of our chambers and convention and visitors bureaus- Akron and Canton. What was on their mind? Making Southwest successful at CAK. For the past seventeen years, our chambers and business community had supported AirTran, making it the preferred airline for low fares and great destinations. During that time though, our leadership asked us repeatedly about Southwest. If AirTran could be so successful at CAK, what about Southwest?

Sometimes there is a topic that you must write about and well, this is it for me. In 2011, Southwest Airlines® purchased AirTran Airways. Customers in northeast Ohio really, really like(d) AirTran. Come to think of it, what’s not to like: business class seating you can afford, comfy full-sized jets, nonstop flights to awesome destinations like Atlanta, Orlando, New York, Boston, Tampa and Ft. Myers.
CAK and AirTran grew up together. It was a good thing. No, it was a great thing. But as...

Simply, codeshare allows two or more airlines to combine itineraries. AirTran and Southwest just announced that they now offer codeshare from CAK starting on April 14, 2013. That will allow our Customers access to 97 destinations- their combined network of domestic and international cities. Codeshare is also stepping stone to the full integration of AirTran and Southwest (scheduled for the end of 2014).
We are very jazzed about this because our AirTran Customers will get a taste of the exceptional Southwest experience. Their boarding...

How to reflect on 2012. Let me see. Incredible. Unprecedented. Impossible.
Well, that’s what we used to think anyway. I was hired to lead the CAK marketing effort in 1996. Let me be the first to admit that I didn’t know a thing about airport marketing. There weren’t many folks doing it back then. There was Barbie Peak in Huntsville and the irascible Carolyn Fennel managing PR in Orlando. Some of our earliest marketing activities were gratefully taken from their playbooks. In 1996 we welcomed...
